LANGPORT & HUISH EPISCOPI BELLRINGERS HONOURED

A Quarter Peal will be rung at All Saints’ Church, Langport starting at 7.30pm on Monday 6 August to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Albert Case in France. The ringing, performed by the Diocesan Association of Change Ringers, will last approximately 45 to 55 minutes.

On Monday 28 May 1917, Albert rang the tenor bell in his first (and probably his last) Full Peal lasting 2 hours and 40 minutes. This was the All Saints ringers' farewell to Albert who joined the Army very shortly afterwards on reaching the age of 18.

15 months later the ringers rang a Quarter Peal with the bells half muffled before the morning service to mark his death on 6 August 1918, only 10 months after he joined up. He was 19 years old, and had worked, like his father, at Kelways Nurseries.

On 30th October 2017 the Diocesan Association of Change Ringers rang a Quarter Peal on the bells of St Mary’s, Huish Episcopi, for Stanley Evenett, a local bellringer who died at Passchendaele on 30 October 1917. Stanley was born in Saffron Walden, Essex, but moved to Langport to work for the auctioneers, Taylor & Hunt. He was 25 years old when he died.
