Contact the Elderly – Local Group
It's all about tea, cake and and brightening up Sunday afternoons. Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people who live alone, and volunteers within their local community, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month.
Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host's home for the afternoon. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. There are no charges involved.
The local group covers a broad area including Huish Episcopi, Somerton, Langport and Curry Rivel. The parties are held on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 3 – 5pm.
Do you know an older person who could benefit?
We are always keen to receive referrals for older guests who would benefit from the warmth and companionship the group offers at it's monthly Synday parties – so many people I speak to say Sunday is often the loneliest day. As a guest you don't have to worry about transport or cooking; that is all done by our wonderful volunteers.
Interested in volunteering? – just a couple of times a year can make a big difference.
Hosts – a great excuse to bake or buy a couple of cakes, or scones. Our hosts welcome the small group to their home or community space just twice a year. Being invited to someone else's home as a guest is part of what make Contact tea parties so special. You need to have a downstairs toilet and no more than 3 steps. Children and pets welcome too!
Drivers – offer to pick up guest(s) and together join the rest of the group for tea. Be a regular or a reserve driver – it all helps.
