Additional information
New Hunky Punks in Langport
The grotesque rooftop carvings of All Saints Church (the hunky punks*) have inspired both a community project and the spawning of a whole new generation of weird and wonderful gargoyles, this time created out of fabrics and recycled materials by the young people of Langport.
The Hunky Punks Project is organised by Somerset Art Works (SAW) and the Churches Conservation Trust and offers workshops, led by professional artists, at which young people will contribute to a dramatic new display at All Saints Church, showcased as part of Langport Festival 1-8 June. Workshop participants come from the Huish Academy, Langport Youth Group, Curry Mallet School, Huish Primary School as well as the wider community.
SAW was delighted to appoint artist Sarah Dicks to lead the Hunky Punks Project. Sarah is a visual artist based in Bristol who specialises in costume, set and puppetry design for theatre. Sarah will run the workshops in both schools and the community and is assisted by placement artist 18-year old Penny Dyer. Mentor artist Julie Roberts (www.julieroberts.co.uk) will oversee the project's creative development.
Upcoming events include:
Open Afternoon: Create your own Hunky Punk, Fri 3 May at All Saints Church, Langport
Hunky Punks Exhibition: Part of Langport Festival 1-8 June at All Saints Church, Langport
Hunky Punks Open Workshop: Create your own Hunky Punk, Sat 8 June at All Saints Church, Langport
About Somerset Art Works (SAW)
SAW works to create an atmosphere of adventure and experimentation in Somerset that inspires artists to produce and present new work, making Somerset a place where audiences can engage with excellent visual art that is surprising and distinctive.
*Hunky Punk is Somerset dialect for the grotesque carvings found on the side of buildings especially churches. They look a bit like gargoyles, however they are only decorative, whereas gargoyles drain water!
