St. Mary’s Church - Mardi Gras celebration dinner.
St Mary’s Church - Mardi Gras celebration dinner at All Saints’ Hall on 9th February, 7.30pm. As the name implies it will be based on the celebration in New Orleans with Creole and Cajun food. Around the world this is the last day of celebration when historically all the sweet and meat items were eaten before the period of abstinence. In England you were shriven on Shrove Tuesday and ate the last of the flour in pancakes and sweet jams and honey. In Spain it is Carnival, eating the meat.
So on Ash Wednesday this becomes the penitential season and people gave up fine food and meat. Many still have a go, perhaps having simple dinners once or twice a week. There are services in churches and Langport and the surrounding area have Ecumenical events.
